Most universities ask the applicant to set down in writing her motivations for undertaking higher education. Some higher ed systems do so straightforwardly. For example, the UK’s UCAS asks, in so many words, ‘Why this course?’.

Others, by contrast, do so more circuitously. Take, for example, the US’ Common App: ‘Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?’.

These written tasks go by many names (‘essays’, ‘personal statement’, ‘motivational letter’, ‘personal insights’, etc.) No matter their appellation, the importance of the applicant’s replies to them cannot be overstated. At minimum, they are her main attempt at convincing a university that she has the right pedigree for a rigorous academic course. In other cases, they serve as, with little exaggeration, detailed insights into her very soul.

Over the course of this presentation, we will go through the ins and outs of some of the most popular higher ed applications, particularly their respective written tasks.

One by one, we’ll see how each crafts its question(s) to the applicant in line with their respective expectations of what an applicant should be telling them (sc. an admissions team) about her worthiness for a specific course or university.

We’ll make a point of showing why it’s crucial for the applicant to understand a given higher ed system’s motivation for asking their unique set of questions. We’ll then go over various strategies the applicant can use to ensure each answer is tailored to the specific system she is writing for.

We’ll also discuss how to manage her essay workload, starting in the summer, to ensure she is not scrambling to finish her applications at the last minute!
