When and who should take IB English?

Most students need to select a specific course of English language study at IB level and take the final exam to demonstrate their capabilities before college admission. Generally, students taking most subjects in English will choose English A, while those who are acquiring English will take English B. Others may not select English at all, and all their subjects will be taken in other languages. English is in no way mandatory for the IB Diploma.

It is worth pausing to reflect on who should take English at IB level and whether it is best for you to take Language A or B.  For many students, there may be options to take either English A or B, and it will rather depend on the course you are considering studying at University and its requirements. Some IB students are aiming for a bi-lingual diploma, hoping to score 3 or higher in two languages selected (from options in language and literature). Alternatively, you might be studying most of your subjects (including I&S and Sciences) in another language, for example, French or Mandarin. If you take English A and score above 3, this can also contribute to the bilingual diploma requirement.

Students usually take this exam when they are 17 or 18 years old, with the option to re-take it for a higher grade after six months.

What is included in the IB English programme?

The IB curriculum explores many facets of the English language, from comprehending literary works to analysing the complex relationship between language and society. Students choose one of the two distinct courses: English A and English B. The first emphasises an in-depth appreciation of literature, while the other focuses on practical language acquisition and use across means and contexts.

Furthermore, the two courses are divided into Standard Level (SL) and High Level (HL). As the names suggest, the main differences are intensity and difficulty level. We advise students to evaluate their proficiency, interests, and career goals and choose the right track before beginning their IB English programme.
