About:
I am a Doctor in Education, an IB Examiner and former Head of English at the most prestigious school in Malta. Having taught at international schools in Europe, Asia and Africa, I have over 15 years of teaching experience in the context of Literary Studies, IB English A ,Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and IGCSE English. Alongside my teaching career, I have an active publication record in peer-reviewed journals that have featured work by philosophers and literary critics tenured at top-ranked faculties (e.g. Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard & New York University). My dual expertise in high school teaching and academia allows me to support my students with an exceptional degree of depth, clarity, and precision. Students under my tutelage thus consistently improve their academic writing skills and achieve their desired grade targets.
"Ben was great, for the first time in english language and literature I felt like I was heard and he gave me the faith that I needed in myself to go and pull off a high grade in english. Ben is able to assess what you need and provide you exactly with that. He has definitely helped me in understanding how to properly approach and analyze texts for both IB English language and lit paper 1 and paper 2."
“Ben was very helpful, and helped to understand literary works better.” IB Student
'Working with Ben as an English tutor was not only incredibly informative in terms of work and things that needed to be improved on for future exams in IB, but also reassuring and positive in terms of understanding why English is an enjoyable subject. I continued to explore my love for English as well as learn the valuable tips needed to score well. Ben is a wonderful tutor, and the sessions helped me tremendously.' IB1 Student
'Ben was extremely credible and helpful in giving feedback on my TOK essay. Not only did he help me thoroughly understand the areas in which I can improve, but it genuinely felt like a conversation more than anything, which made it much easier to see how to actually apply the feedback. He entertained a back-and-forth discussion and allowed me to think out loud, which helped me further understand the inherent complexities of a TOK essay and refine my ideas more effectively.' Teaching experience and approach:
Following my undergraduate studies in English Literature and Philosophy, I pursued a MA in Philosophy and a Postgraduate Certificate in Secondary Teaching. I then went on to complete a PhD in Education with a focus on English for Academic Purposes, which has provided me with unique insights and skills to teach students how to effectively communicate their ideas. Over my teaching career I have taught at international schools in China, Gabon and Malta. As a committed secondary English teacher, I have consistently helped my students to excel in their studies and fully satisfy IGCSE and IB assessment criteria. Both in the classroom and in my private lessons, I am known for my deep command of my subject areas and ability to build a strong rapport with my students.
