Navigating IB Results Day: What Every Student and Parent Should Know

July 3, 2026 4 min read

For IB students and their families, results day is one of those moments that seems to loom larger the closer it gets. To help ease some of that anxiety, TutorsPlus recently hosted a webinar on the topic, led by University Admissions expert Dr Daniele Labriola, who brings years of experience guiding students into top universities across the UK, US, and Swiss systems.

As TutorsPlus Managing Director Alex Marrable pointed out in her introduction, this year the topic is personal as well as professional, since her own son is among the students awaiting results. It’s a reminder that no matter how prepared a family feels, results day nerves are universal.

Here are the key takeaways from the session.

Understanding What Your Results Mean For Your Specific Destination

One of Daniele’s central points is that there’s no single, one-size-fits-all way to interpret IB results. What matters most is where a student is headed next, because different higher education systems respond to results very differently.

A student applying to a UK university, for example, will need to think about their results in terms of firm and insurance offers. A student aiming for a public or federal university in Switzerland needs to keep in mind the minimum points a particular course requires, while many universities in Europe simply require obtaining the IB Diploma. A student targeting a specific university in the US might enjoy some extra flexibility and space to follow up with further academic or personal development achieved over the summer.

Because of this, Daniele emphasised that families should go into results day with a clear picture of what their outcome will actually mean for their particular pathway. This means having a concrete understanding of the next steps tied to their intended destination, rather than a generic sense of “good” or “bad” results.

Staying Calm by Being Informed

If there’s one message that came through clearly in the session, it’s that calm comes from preparation, not just optimism.

Daniele was candid on this point: “We all know they’re nerve wracking no matter how confident or not so confident you might be going into it.”

His advice: the best way to manage those nerves is to understand, in advance, what the possible outcomes mean and what the corresponding next steps would be. When students and parents already know what they’ll need to do the moment results are released, whether that’s confirming a place, triggering an insurance offer, or exploring alternatives, much of the panic of the unknown is removed.

As Daniele put it, “I’d like to think that everybody here is going to be informed about what their potential next steps are, and that is more than half the battle.”

Why You Need a Plan B (Even If You’re Confident)

Perhaps the most universally applicable piece of advice from the session was the importance of having a backup option.

This isn’t about expecting the worst. It’s about ensuring that if results don’t go exactly as hoped, there’s already a clear, considered alternative in place rather than a scramble to figure one out under pressure. Having that safety net decided ahead of time takes much of the sting out of an unexpected outcome and lets students move forward with a plan rather than uncertainty.

In Daniele’s words, “no matter how confident you are going into this and no matter what your higher ed system or destination is, knowing your options, having a Plan B or an insurance policy here is going to be in your best interest.”

The Bottom Line

Results day will always carry some nerves. That’s simply part of the process. But Daniele’s core message was reassuring: understanding what your results mean for your specific university destination, and having a well-thought-out Plan B in place, can transform results day from a moment of dread into one you’re fully prepared for.
