About:

Hi there! I’m Helen, I've been a professional Maths tutor since 2010, focusing on A Level and iGCSE/GCSE students, and in 2024 I won Secondary Tutor of the Year at the UK’s National Tutoring Awards. I am an online specialist and I use innovative tools to create engaging and inspiring lessons which are tailored to individual learning styles. I've worked with students who have a variety of capabilities, temperaments and goals, including some who have been home-schooled and some with additional learning needs. For some the goal has been a grade 4 at GCSE level to allow them to progress into further education whilst others, particularly A Level students, have aimed to gain a deeper and fuller appreciation of mathematics. I aim to make lessons engaging, interactive, and even a bit fun!

"Helen has been tutoring my 15-year old son online in math for the past two years. He is very happy with her tutoring. He finds the 'bit paper' system that she uses to be intuitive and to work well for learning. She adapts her pace to his needs so that he is able to understand the content they review together. Her kind personality puts him at ease and facilitates his learning. We have been very fortunate to find her and will continue to work with her as long as possible." - MYP Maths Parent.

'I have been working with Helen for several years, and I am now in my final year of the IB diploma. She has helped me maintain good grades in what I consider to be my worst subject and I have the confidence I will do well on my exams with her help'. MYP & IB Student

Teaching experience and approach:

I achieved a BSc Hons in Pure and Applied Mathematics from the University of Exeter in 2008 before studying for a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics. Unfortunately I had to withdraw from the course at the end due to ill health but my training gave me an understanding of the theory of mathematics education and experience in the classroom which I went on to use in tutoring students. In 2024 I won Secondary Tutor of the Year at the UK’s National Tutoring Awards as well as being the runner up for Professional Tutor of the Year in 2025.

I believe every student is unique and I use my experience to adapt each lesson to their individual needs. This can be helping to build their confidence, to fill gaps in their learning, or to overcome fear and resistance to Maths. I work at the pace of each child, building a working relationship with them that allows them to feel comfortable enough to talk to me about what they are struggling with. This, in turn, allows me to target my support to where they need it most.
