About:
I am an experienced international IB educator specialising in Environmental Systems and Societies, Theory of Knowledge, and Biology. My career spans field studies, classroom teaching, and department leadership across Asia, Europe, and the UK. I am a current IB TOK examiner, former ESS examiner, and an active contributor to the current IB curriculum review cycle — writing proposed units, trialling new IA criteria, and delivering upskilling workshops for workshop leaders. My passion for environmental education is at the heart of everything I teach, making me a motivating force for students preparing their Internal Assessments and Extended Essays. My deep subject knowledge, combined with genuine enthusiasm for sustainability and student-centred learning, makes me a uniquely well-qualified guide for students tackling some of the IB's most conceptually rich courses.
Teaching experience and approach:
I hold a BSc in Ecology, a PGCE in Life and Environmental Science and an MSc in Education for Sustainability with a focus on Climate Change education in the IB Diploma. My teaching career began as a Senior Tutor in Biology and Geography with the Field Studies Council in the UK, and has since taken me across Thailand, Singapore, Portugal, and the Netherlands, where I have held roles including Head of Biology and Environmental Sciences, Head of ToK, Field Centre Director of Studies, and most recently Teacher of ESS, ToK, and MYP Science at an international school in Amsterdam.
In my tutoring, I am a firm believer in activating the student voice. I draw on Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) frameworks and Socratic dialogue to unpack concepts, address misconceptions, and help students develop a clear view of their own learning. I use a wide variety of approaches, all designed to make the student's thinking visible and to support genuine conceptual understanding rather than surface-level recall. This philosophy is particularly well-suited to the inquiry-based, discussion-rich demands of ESS and ToK, where the ability to argue, reflect, and connect ideas is what separates good students from outstanding ones.
